Moving Galleries

On an earlier post I told you that two haiku of mine had been selected to be part of Melbourne's 'Moving Galleries' project. 36 haiku (or Australian 'Rooku" - 'Roo' meaning Australian origin from kangaROO) are to be exhibited along with winning artwork on 40 of Melbourne's trains. More details here:  www.movinggalleries.org
Yesterday my wife and I attended the launch. The minister for the arts was there as well as TV coverage and reporters. I met several well known haijin whom I'd never met before and heard some great readings and had a very civilized lunch (all paid for!).
The best part of all, however, was that I got a name badge with 'Paul Hodder - POET' on it, and even better, my wife got one with 'Guest of poet'. I got her to carry my bag and hold my plate of sandwiches for a whole hour!! She made me take the badge off my pyjamas when we went to bed...

What an experience -- congratulations again, Paul! Whom exactly have you met? Was Myron there? Your ku is so cute :) And you are such a handsome old sparrow, he-he, I especially like your hairdo! :)))

I did see Myron, but by the time I had ordered my coffee, grabbed a handful of sandwiches and found a spot by the river, he was gone! I did speak to Lorin Ford, who is my favourite Australian haijin and I saw Carla Sari and a few others whose names I recognised (from their name tags)but didn't get the opportunity to talk to. I found it most interesting to match the name to the face to the work. It was interesting to note that the average age of the winners (not all of them regular writers of haiku) was around 50 years old. I felt quite spritely!

BTW, I let my hair grow out for this event - I scare people too much otherwise - the advantage of this is that I always get a spare seat next to me on public transport! ;)

Thanks for telling me about this, Paul! I wish I could meet Lorin one day, too :) She has one of my sumi-e original, btw -- as a prize for her winning haiku in the Year 2005 Shiki kukai! Say "Hi" to her for me, next time you talk with her :)

My husband likes to cut his hair as much as he possibly can -- he would be like you if I would let him, hahaha! :)))))

You have an exellent sense of humor, dear Paul. I am very very glad to know you (and, I hope so, to be your friend (even if I know well you prefer Andrea better!))
Maybe one day we can see each other in the REAL life...

You are too kind. There is a possibility that I may visit Italy next year with my girls. I will make it a priority to come and visit. I really would like some of that pizza made with the secret ingredient Andrea talked about...
and who knows, maybe I will like you as much as Andrea if I meet you....(you may have to learn to love his cd collection first though) ;)

My wife ACCIDENTLY learnt the names of all the players in the England football and cricket teams just by being in the same house as me. ;)

this is WAY COOL!!! haiku (i mean, rooku) on trains.
congratulations :)) i love your haiku.

you were one of 36 poets chosen from 1000! i went to the website and read all of the entries. glad you got to see some known haijins and some new haijins. also great that a 3rd grader won, too. many other writers and scholars amongst the winners. i also like the art that won. this is a great idea for any city transportation. hmmm.....here it could be called "cinciku". you do not look old, my friend :)

The whole idea started from a group of haijin approaching the train company and government, not the other way around. From that it has turned into quite an event. Real grass roots stuff.
The art is great as well. varied and a great revelation to me as I am sure the haiku are to others.
The 3rd grader loved being there more than me I think. I wonder what inspiration it has given him.
I DO feel old though (wink).
Thanks for your kind comments. ;)
